We are planning a return trip to hawaii next year to see things like the whale migration. We are looking for any information on what type or brand of binoculars would be great for the trip. We are planning on staying in a home on the north shore near the pipeline and it is said you can sit on your deck and watch them. We are mostly wanting to improve our looking. The price range we are looking at would be $150.00 or less. Any advice anyone has would be great.
I do have my eye on a nikon action 12×50 binocular. The thing I like about this one is the fact about star gazing with them and I already have a tripod.
I think you can get a decent pair for about that. Your decision will be whether to get a pair of 8×40s or a pair of 10×40s. Some people have a little difficulty holding 10×40s steady enough. Hand shake tends to be more obvious with the 10×40s. They will however give you a slightly closer look, but not much.
Here is a link to a pair or two that will meet your needs. They are both waterproof since you will be on a whale watching boat.
At $159.99 but no shipping or sales tax. A good pair. The 10×42 are are $10 more.

These are not quite as good in the field of view department but they are not bad and only $62.00 a pair. One for you and one for your wife too. The 10×42s are $30 a pair more.

The type that you buy will be determined by whether you will be looking at birds from closer distances as is common in wooded areas, or whether you will be looking at shorebirds. My article on binoculars will give you more details.
