wanting to spend a few weeks in hawaii. the idea for me is to really be out in nature, hiking, doing my thing (landscape photography). Besides the beaches, looking for green, lush, amazing scenery- I know there’s a lot of it there- just don’t know which areas are best bet. thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Maui is the best island by far for scenery and things to do.

Try a drive around the island. There are some amazing landscapes. Also, try a zip line expedition. They take you through 2 miles of lush hiking.

Consider mauiadventures.com. I get you want to do your own thing. But the best way to see what you want is by expedition.

Have fun! (I just got back and miss it terribly.)

I have hiked several trails on Maui. The Lahaina Pali Trail and LaPerouse Bay took me away from a lot of tourists but they aren’t green.

Ohe’o Gulch was green. I think if you get up early you will avoid a lot of people.

Waihe’e Ridge Trail was green and we didn’t see anyone else on it.

The island of Kauai has the most lush green scenery, though there is not much to do on that island and it can be rainy. The Big Island of Hawaii has more area and is less lush and green and more volcanic. Oahu is too crowded and touristy. Maui is my favorite island because it has lots of beautiful green scenery PLUS lots of things to see and do, both in tourist areas and far away from tourist areas.

The greenest parts of Maui are in the northeast, along the road to Hana. Spend a couple days on that road and stay overnight in Hana a couple nights, and explore that whole non-tourist side of the island.

Before you go, buy these books about hikes on Maui:

You can order them all online from Amazon if they are not in your local bookstore.
