Do you have advice on Cruising Excursions in Hawaii or the Spirit of America cruise ship?

We’ve scheduled a Hawaiian cruise on the Spirit of America, and may want to schedule our own land excursions. I am told they will pick you up at the dock and return you to the ship.

Are you familiar with Hawaiian tourism, esp. cruising? If you are, what suggestions would you have? What’s the best way to save money on excursions or other things to do while in port? Is there perhaps an agency over there that can book adventures & excursions for us?

What excursions have you done and enjoyed the most? We’re a retired couple, so hiking the Na Pali coast is probably out, but we’re open to any suggestions.

Also, if you have sailed on the Spirit of America, we’d appreciate any advice about the ship, ports of call, or cruising in general. This is "free-style" cruising, and anything you could tell us about that would also be appreciated.

Vacation in Hawaii? Where to go?

My boyfriend and I are planning on going to Hawaii for a vacation in April and are unsure of where in Hawaii we should go. I know each island has something special about it but am not sure which is the best.

We want to avoid the extreme tourism but also don’t want an area where there is nothing to do. Any suggestions of the most romantic, fun, but uncrowded areas? Thanks!

My personal favorite is the Big Island.
1st you can avoid going thru Honolulu if you want to avoid the crowds(regular flights go to Kailua-Kona airport, on the west side of the island)
the west side of the island is more volcanic(kind of like the desert, but next to the sea(very good weather)all of the east side of the island is like a rain forest.
places you can go: Kilauea volcano, Muana Loa Observatory, countless beaches and waterfalls

it is probably one of the 2 least touristy islands(the other one being Kauai)

i find it boring than other countries tourism’s sites.
i mean malaysia definitely deserves more than this!!

i mean if you look at hawaii’s tourism site http://www.gohawaii.com/
its so much better with descriptions, similes and metaphors and malaysia is boring. the last time i checked the malaysia’s tourism site, it was better – with similes and descriptions but somehow they changed it for worse. but i like the Malaysia Truly Asia tourism adverts they are perfectt((::

Yeah I agree with you it does look kind of boring compared to other websites. maybe you should email them and let them know. but don’t hold your breath waiting for any kind of change!

Does anyone know about this school in Hawaii called Hawaii Business College?

I’ts on Oahu, and I would like to get more informaton about it. how does it cost and how much is it for out of town students to go there? Any Dorms available with this school? How long is the Travel/ Tourism Program they have there? DO u have to take a placement test?

It’s a private school, so there’s no difference between tuition for in-state and out-of-state students.

For the 2006-2007 school year, tuition is $10,980, books and supplies are estimated to cost around $1,200, room and board is estimated to cost $8,010 and other expenses are estimated at $4,410. There’s a $50 application fee, and you need to have graduated from high school or have a GED, you need to show them a negative TB test completed in the last year, and have to pass a basic skills test to be admitted.

No dorms, but they can provide you referrals for places that offer off-campus housing.

The travel and tourism program takes 90 quarter credits to complete. How long that will take depends on whether you’re planning to attend full-time or part-time.

What careers are offered in Hawaii?

I want to live in Hawaii someday. What are some possible careers that would allow me to live there? So far, I only know of marine biology, something in tourism, or translating. Please help! Thanks.

Nursing has a pretty good track record of salaries being competative with most mainland cities. With the exception of manufacturing, & research & development, we have most of the same needs/opportunities as most places. We need doctors, nurses, teachers. lawyers, realtors, plumbers, electricians, retail, hospitality, etc. The issues are cost of living vs salary, adjusting to the local lifestyle, and the potential difficulty of breaking into any particular profession here.

Has the Pear Harbor Bombing In 1941 altered Tourism in Hawaii? if so How?

The bombing made the Hawaiian islands a war zone, and there was the fear that the Japanese might invade Hawaii. No tourism functioned until many islands had been taken from the Japanese in 1943 and 1944. By 1945 the islands were once more a site for tourism. Today the site of the sunken battleship the USS Arizona is a memorial to the soldiers and sailors that died on that day of December 7, 1941, in Pearl Harbor, and is one of the biggest memorials in any of the 50 states. Recently some 40 million dollars has been set aside for renovation and upgrading of the site.
