Mauna Kea is a very remote location. It has no public accommodations, food, or gasoline service. The observatory buildings are usually closed to the public. There are no permanent restrooms above the Visitor Information Station. The only public telephone above Hale Pohaku is an emergency phone in the entrance to the University of Hawaii 2.2-m Telescope building. Vehicles should be in good working condition with good brakes and sufficient fuel to return to Hilo or Waimea. Emergency services, including medical assistance, may be two hours away.

The road above the OCIA to the Mauna Kea Observatories is unpaved, rough, steep, winding, and dangerous. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles are permitted above the OCIA. The road can be traversed in about half an hour in good weather, but extreme caution must be exercised when driving it, particularly on the descent. Use low gear and be on the lookout for slide areas and for loose gravel. Do not drive over 25 mph. Use headlights if it is foggy. The switchback section of the road above OCIA is particularly hazardous during the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset, because of the low elevation of the Sun – in several sections of the road, you must drive directly towards the Sun, so it is very difficult to see oncoming traffic. The early Polynesian settlers brought their own form of massage and, like a canoe plant, it evolved to become something uniquely Hawaiian. It was practiced by everyone, from child to chief. As an indigenous practice that evolved over hundreds of years in isolated valleys throughout the island chain, there are many different “schools” of lomilomi with different approaches and techniques.
After American missionaries arrived in 1820 and converted many in the Kingdom of Hawaii to Christianity, traditional healing arts were scorned as heathen and primitive. Various laws prohibited “heathen” worship and any related Native Hawaiian healing practices. Lomilomi as part of medical practice went underground. But lomilomi as restorative massage remained popular not only among the Hawaiians, but among foreign residents and visitors as well.
American writer Charles Nordhoff wrote about his experience with lomilomi massage in his 1875 book, Northern California, Oregon, and the Sandwich Islands. [1] For Robert Louis Stevenson it was disagreeable, but English adventurer Isabella Bird found it delightful. (Chai 2005: 77) Not only did foreigners receive lomilomi, they also gave it. According to the first Director of the Bishop Museum, writing in 1908, one of the most skilled practitioners was Sanford Dole (one of the leaders of the overthrow of the Kingdom). (Chai 2005: 26)Although the Legislature of the Kingdom of Hawaii banned curing through “superstitious methods” in 1886, massage was not subject to legislation until 1945. In 1947, the Board of Massage was established to regulate lomilomi and massage. The law required practitioners to pass a written test on anatomy, physiology and massage theory.

P. Phillips Newman Jr., Submarine Squadron 1 Medical Officer stationed at Subase Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in the early 1950s, with footage filmed aboard the USS Coucal (ASR-8) sub rescue ship, and on an unknown submarine. Disassociative identity disorder and hospital.?

I have DID and it is is bad. feeling really out of control and my alters want to come out really bad. I have 5-6 alters. Two are evil. one wants me to get hurt and die and the other wants to hurt and rampage. I am on meds but feel like i am not getting better. I would like to go to the hospital but they take for over night and release me or they say I can’t come in because I have sleep apnea and no medical devices are allowed in the ward. The nurse tell the DR I am too complicated for them. I live on Hawaii and if I want to go to another island they say no, because my local needs to treat me. It is called Area of Care. I want to go to Honolulu for help but nobody will send me or help me. my Psychiatrist is a quack and talks down to me and ridicules me. I can;t find any other Dr that take medicare or medicaid. I need help. The local free clinic is only taking very very sever mental illness because of budget cutbacks and they say I don;t qualify. help me please.

i’m sorry you aren’t able to get the care you feel you need~but i haven’t any ideas to help you out & i sure haven’t any funds to send you to get the care you feel you need~so sorry♦

Moving to Hawaii with my 2 kids – good idea or bad idea? where to move? Can we do it?

Hi everyone – just looking for a little advice and insight would be great!!

Hubby, My two kids ( ages 4 and 1) and I just returned from an amazing vacation on oahu – We absoulutly loved it there – (except honolulu and Waikiki- too busy for us) We have been wanting to move for sometime now, just had not found a place we thought we would be happy yet. We currently live near the seattle area, and HATE it. We can not stand the lifestyle here, everyone is rude / materialistic and busy busy busy… not to mention the weather sucks! we need a change! We just are not sure oahu is the right island? are the other ones cheaper? Hubby works in construction and I have a little stay at home mom ebay buisness- so we are not wealthy, is there afforadable renting? how are the schools & medical? We are thinking we will need to just sell all our belongings and start over? Or is there a way to ship some stuff? Also what is a good town for the kids? We stayed in Kailua – which was okay but we really loved north shore, but did not see many housing areas? I have heard its really expensive also, but we really didnt notice it being that bad? Is it just rent / electric, etc…that gets you?

Thanks everyone for your info…I couldnt choose a best, cause all 3 were on point. ..not exactlly what I wanted to hear, but the economy sucks… I guess we will keep looking for somewhere to go, we have to get out of WA before we go crazy though!

Probably the first thing you should do to get an idea of the difference in cost of living between Seattle & Honolulu is to visit one of the many web sites that have cost of living calculators. I will post a link. If it doesn’t do calculations for both owning and renting homes, look around till you find another one that has what you need.

Here we talk about "the price of paradise" & it is steep. Your pay is usually less than what you would make on the mainland & the cost of just about everything from rent to milk to gas is much higher. You won’t have to pay for heating your home or winter clothing, but that is about the only place you will catch a break.

We are currently going through some pretty rough economic times d/t a big downturn in tourism, which is basically the driver of our economy. I don’t know specifics about construction, but in general this is not a good time to find work here.

Public education is not the greatest here to begin with, but the state’s loss of tax revenue has really impacted on the school system. The schools have been given 17 furlough days, where they are closed to save money. The result is that we have the lowest number of education days in the entire country. The majority of public school teachers send their kids to private schools so that should tell you something.

Medical care is pretty good, I think.

Sorry to be so discouraging, but it is a bad time to try to relocate here.

There is a good DID treatment program at River Oaks Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. You may want to give them a call to see if they still accept medicare (they do, if I’m not mistaken).

REPAC Shriners Medical Supplies to Pohnpei News Story on KITV (Honolulu, Hawaii)

KITV news story on Reach out Pacific’s (REPAC) July 2007 project that brought surplus medical supplies and equipment from Shriners Hospital in Hawaii to hospitals in need on the Micronesian island of Pohnpei. Transportation of the goods was facilitated by REPAC and was made possible by the generous contributions of Matson. From July 28, 2007.
