Some good answers above, namely about tourism producing lower-paying service-oriented jobs…
Here’s mine:
-Tourism being our "bread and butter" IS a problem in itself. Our entire economy depends on other people visiting our islands and spending money here. So when you have events such as September 11th and tourism dries up, no one escapes its effects. We have nothing else to fall back on.
-The elements that tourism brings in goes directly against what some Native Hawaiians and locals want. Development on previously "unspoiled" lands is always a hot topic of discussion, and things can get bad when the people who live here perceive tourism as being the thing that is destroying their quality of life.
-Related to the above topic, the tourists themselves become the scapegoats for the problems that residents face. Residents ignorantly see the tourist from Oklahoma as the reason why their brother lost his job, which is why you will often find the "effing Haole" discussion come up….but that’s for another thread.
Last one, since I should actually go and do work:
-Money is often disproportionately allocated to tourism and tourist-related….stuff. So what we have are a lot of problems that need addressing that go ignored. For example: public parks that are close to Waikiki are often well maintained, but others on the other side of the island that look like dumps.
We all know that tourism is our main economy, and without it, our island would die. But to say that it does not create bigger problems is short-sighted and ignorant.
Good question.
I’m 19. Male.
Staying at the four seasons for a week. I know, life is quite tough. But no friends are going to be with me I’m pretty much all by myself. I want to make the most of it. I’m pretty shy so I’m not sure what Im going to do.
What would you do? Maybe find some romance? ; ) thanks
Its a fun place—rent a bike(tool around Kialua-Kona),take a tour to the volcano or any that gets you out to see the land–floating the Ditch is dirferent(YOU float thru a 7-8 mile irriagation canal(tunnels)–not a heartstopper but cool–take a camera—askl around or they have a web thing—cool place your staying in–have fun and meet some new friends–Bruce
How do you know?
you have to have balls.
well… you have to actually know how to surf REAL WELL. be aware of locals, if you show up not knowing NO one and paddle out to pipe, you will get punched in the face. If you really want to surf pipe enter a contest. A. its big. B. dont have to worry about locals. you have to be surfing many years…. and hawaiian waters are rough. strong. be prepared for the worst.
I would like to have a wedding on a private beach area in Hawaii or countries in Caribbean. I know that there are some luxury villas in Caribbean do have a private beach area but there is usually a 5-7 days accomodation required. It’s kind of expensive for me to stay in a villa for that long. My budget is about $3000-$5000 for a simple wedding ceremony and some photographs. Any suggestion for the locations or planning companies?
Well, it wasn’t a PRIVATE beach, but it was kind of a secluded AREA of the beach that they use almost exclusively for weddings…We went to Hawaii and used www.wedaloha.com (on Oahu)…They have several locations that they use frequently, but we got married on Waialae (Sp?) Beach…If you’re interested, you can check out our pictures on http://www.flickr.com/photos/korina1971/sets/72157600739227963/
We had a blast, it was beautiful, and the wedding planners and photographers were AWESOME!!!!
*EDIT: And it was affordable…We spent about $600 on the whole ceremony INCLUDING photos…although we did have just myself and my groom with no guests, and went with a simpler wedding package. Depending on what you want and how many people you have, this is VERY doable on your budget.
To stay cheap in Hawaii, I use Twizi! (It is a website that lists places to stay for less than 25 dollars.)
It depends on what types of attractions you are interested in. If you want shopping, lots of dining options, a busy nightlife, museums, historical sites, and natural beauty, go to Oahu.
Maui is less busy than Oahu but still has good shopping, dining and nightlife options. Kauai and the Big Island (Hawaii) are less busy than Maui and have fewer shopping and dining choices. The scenic beauty on these four islands is spectacular and can be very different. Oahu has great beaches, Polynesian Cultural Center, ‘Iolani Palace (the only royal palace in the U.S.), and Pearl Harbor/USS Arizona Memorial.
Kauai – beautiful beaches, dramatic cliffs (Na Pali coastline), Waimean Canyon ("the Grand Canyon of the Pacific"), waterfalls, and lots of hiking trails.
Maui – large mountains, lots of greenery, sugar cane fields, nice beaches.
Big Island (Hawaii) – black sand beaches, Volcanoes National Park, snow on Mauna Kea.
Have a great time!
Whale watching in Hawaii. An older passenger was a native Alaskan and shaman of his tribe. He said he was meeting one here on it’s last journey home. The shaman said his friend had arrived. In the distance a whale broke the surface then headed directly toward us. The shaman said the whale would sing to us as it stayed by our boat.
When it was time to return the shaman with moist eyes held up his right arm over the water with his palm out to say farewell. The whale rolled over and extended his flipper up in the air then moved to the boat to touch his hand. “Goodbye my friend. Sleep well. I will miss you.” he said. The whale then rolled back and poked his head out of the water and blew a water spout and we saw the most beautiful rainbow in the arch of water. The whale then turned away and headed out to sea with a wave of his huge tail. It turned once for a last look and waved goodbye with it’s flipper. It was a very touching moment. I took photos of everything. I’ll never forget it.
yes i have a few times. and i tell you what those memories are the best to have.
I am planning a first time trip to Hawaii and I want to know the best island to stay on. I don’t want to be in a highrise hotel off of the shore and I don’t want to be in a place that is too crowded or too much like the big city I am from. BUT I do want to do alot of activities while I am there like snorkeling, jet skiing, and all of the fun things that Hawaii has to offer. I am planning to go in the end of March. Any ideas?
I think Maui is a nice mix, it’s not too slow, nor is it a total tourist spot. However it’s a little more expensive then the other islands. The Hyatt Regency on Maui, is simply amazing, At times you can get a special rate from them http://www.maui-vacation-hotels.us . I stayed at the Hyatt, I was very pleased. I’ve also stayed at the HOTEL HANA MAUI with a group of girl friends, and it’s not as fancy, but clean and neat and right on the water!!! And we were able to bring a small dog with us. The GRAND WAILEA RESORT is BEAUTIFUL, hands down, to me, it’s one of the prettiest hotels on the island.
If you’re looking for something a little less in the pocket, try MAUI SEASIDE HOTEL, it’s nothing she’ she’ at all, but it’s right on the water as well. And if you’re going to be out and about more of the day, really if it’s clean, and neat, it might be something you like? http://www.maui-vacation-hotels.us/hotels/maui-maui-seaside-hotel.php
Don’t forget there are bed and breakfast’s to stay in, or condos, and a lot of times, it’s much less then a hotel, but just as nice.
Enjoy the sugar cane fields when you’re over there.
I would like activities more than touristy things to do. If anyone has any cost cutting hints I’d appreciate it also.
The island of Hawaii (Big island) has the most activities! They’ve got awesome beaches (Hapuna beach was ranked as one of the best beaches in the states!) so you can do lots of beach activities such as swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing…you also can do kayacking. They’ve also got volcanos; Mauna Kea, Kilauea Volcano national park etc. I recommend that you stay in Kailua-Kona side, not Hilo side. Hilo side rains pretty often and it’s more humid.
Big island hawaii is just such an amazing place to visit. The scenery that you see right after you get out of the airplane is really impressive. It makes you feel that you came to another planet or something. One thing that Big island could be missing is shopping. But unless you are crazy for shopping, big island is the place to visit!!
